Dude, this whole leaving town for the tropics thing is getting out of control. Just as I got a gig for 2 weeks in the Carribean, Lil' Louis has to all come out of retirement and shit. Apparently he's doing a small tour to promote a new book, "A Man's Diary", and CD, entitled "Two Sides to Every Story" which is written by Louis from the perspective "depicting the joy, love, and heartache" of dating Lil' Louis. Sounds awesome. Since I never got to see him the first time around, I'm pretty excited for the opportunity.

I will be missing the show next Saturday at my new favorite NY Club, Santos Party House, but luckily there's a 2nd NY appearance scheduled on Tuesday, regrettably at S.O.B.s, one of my least favorite spots. No matter, got my tickets for tuesday, but if I were you, i'd be sure not to miss the gig next weekend, when he'll be playing with Louis Vega. Once again, its a reminder of why, despite the weather, its pretty damn good to be in NY.

This one was sent over from my friend in Ireland, Iarla O'Sullivan, who's been a big benefactor of SGB. He's started a Disco/House label/collective called "Galaxy Comète Records" that is doing its part to bring back the french touch, giving away all their releases for free. So far they're off to a great start, and I hope to hear more from em.

Iarla's been feeding me great tracks for the past two years, even during the times when I've been a bad blogger and probably didn't deserve 'em. So head over to GCR's page and have a listen, I think you'll like what you hear, and if you do, send him some support.

Also take note that Krapulax is active on Myspace, and in the studio, and is looking for a label, so if you're down with what you hear, on both this 12" and his page, pass his name around and get his ass a contract--we can all use a little love with the economy all gone to shit.

Wandering around the internet between football games this morning, I came across this cool "blog" called "Bozman Website" that has a bunch of really good DJ mixes I imagine many of you would enjoy. However, early on while scouring of the archives, I saw a long video from the "Red Bull Music Academy" showing Theo Parrish playing records from a sofa and talking about music for a couple hours. Its a cool way of seeing one of the US's great touring DJs, and its a great way to absorb lot of knowledge from one of the greats.

Also, there's a recent interview with Theo on Resident Advisor HERE.

Just got confirmation in an email that Falcon is coming back to the Big Apple next saturday night, @ Le Poisson Rouge. If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know how great my fandom of Falcon is, and he's one of the most entertaining DJs around. If you are around, PLEASE DONT MISS THIS ONE. WARNING: Really Poor Recording Quality!

Still, i think this live set is absolutely incredible, and it makes me very upset that i missed Super_Collider's North American shows years ago. I've had this set for a while now, but know very little about its origin. Sounds like someone recorded a board feed and had the trim set too high, so the bass is pretty blown out. However, give it a chance, i promise its worth it. It sounds to me like an Ableton Live set, but 2002 would be pretty early to be using Ableton, and after seeing both of these gentlemen in the last year, it seems like Vogel uses MAX/MSP in his live PAs, and Lidell some kind of hardware system. If you have further info, please leave it in the comments, and if anyone has a better version of this and feels like passing it along, I'll put up the better version.

Hey internet friendos!

I'm back from my self-imposed Summer vacation. I'm starting slow, but hopefully i'll get SGB up and running like it was back in the day.

Just wanted to pass along a link to you Daft Punk fanboys out there. Scion/Vice Records have a website set up, with a "radio station" set up, and currently they have a 3 hour loop playing, allegedly with with interviews with Fred Falke, Todd Edwards, and the drummer from the Boredoms. Click this link, and then click Scion Radio 17. I'm listening to Todd Edwards talking with a great think New Jersey accent about the making of "Discovery", definitely interesting stuff. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be downloadable, so if you're missing this, I imagine you could hear it again around 6:20PM EST.

Fred Falke played Tribeca Grand!

Kristin from Showtrotta sent me an exciting SMS on Saturday afternoon, that Fred Falke would be DJing @ FIXED's party @ the Tribeca Grand. Unfortunately i wasn't able to post info up here on time (as i mentioned earlier, dead computer sucks), but I hope that any of you that may have come were given a similar heads up.

I usually love parties at the Tribeca Grand, as its a very swanky change of pace from Studio B and the like, but it was a little bit of a bummer this time. They seemed to have the A/C turned off in the back room, which made the whole thing a bit draining (especially when its Fred Falke, playing those huge Epic Tracks). Adding to the strain on our senses was the sound system dying about 20 mins into his set, likely due to the rediculous heat in the room. This REALLY sucked as Fred was absolutely tearing us up (he seemed absolutely Livid--in a subdued French kind of way). They managed to fix it about 10 minutes later, with the aid of an oscillating fan borrowed from the kitchen.

I'm never really that good at summing up DJ sets, so I'll leave it to Kristin to describe the events more thoroughly, but I will say that it was one of the more inspired performances I've seen in a really long time. From moment one, when he pulled out a Fender jazz bass to play basslines from his Music For My Friends EP live (and yeah, thats him playing those nasty rhythm tracks on those Falke/Braxe tracks) we all knew we were getting something a little out of the ordinary. In general, he stuck to his own tracks, along with those with his production partner Alan Braxe, but he managed to do enough little tweaks and stutters in Ableton to keep us on our toes (even fanboys like myself who could practically sing along to all the anthems he dropped).

Needless to say, I was wiped out when all was said and done, but thoroughly satisfied, and left feeling quite good about music, for the first time in a long whle.

Just checked my inbox to see a letter from LOVE, which said that on 8/17, SACRED RHYTHM is back. As it turns out, it looks as its just a one-off, not necessarily a sign that the bi-weekly Sunday Soiree is returning for good, but it'll be cool to see Joe again and a lot of familiar faces.

Also, not sure how many of you were at the Respect is Burning party last thursday at Santos' Party House, but it was a blast. And the rumors are true, BEST SOUND SYSTEM in NY (save for LOVE when Joe Claussell takes over).

Romain Séo, AKA Raw Man, of The Buffalo Bunch, We In Music, and most recently the band >Amen Birdmen, will be performing tomorrow night (5/2) for Ruff Club @ the Annex in NYC. I got the chance to chat with Romain the other day, and he let me know that he'll be performing an Ableton live set for the first time (he received a little coaching from another Ableton user you might know, DJ Falcon). Expect a mix of his old classics and some of his newer electro tracks and maybe some harder stuff. I'm personally quite intrigued. Show some respect and be there! And if you see me, come say hi!

Also, earlier in the afternoon (4-8pm), Raw Man will be joining Jamie Fanatic and the Ruff Club team on Rat Radio NYC for their weekly Ruff Club Radio. Not sure exactly what to expect, but if you can't make it to NY in time for Friday night, check it out as your consolation prize.

Louis La Roche: The Peach EP

A couple of months ago, the Blog world was atwitter as a filtery track tagged as "TB" was deposited in the comment sections of several blogs, leading some to speculate that Thomas Bangalter had gone rogue and started leaking tracks into the blogosphere. A Brit named Louis La Roche claimed that it was his, setting off more debate. I wrote about it in the weeks that followed, and hadn't heard much more about it (besides positive response when i played it for others).

However, last week Louis La Roche (real name: Brett Ewels, age 17?!?) sent this blogger (and i'd assume several others) a link to his new album, The Peach EP, and i'm very happy to share it here with you. You've heard these sounds before, but it is certainly high quality stuff (and i havent been able to get Do You Remember out of my head for days). The fact that he's 17 gives me great hope for the future of this sound, much in the same way that The Martinez Bros. are breathing new life into deep house.

· 1st, NYers and Americans All, my friend MicProbes has excitedly informed me that he's booked Romain Seó (Raw Man, and of Buffalo Bunch and We In Music) to play his Ruff Club party on May 2nd. Obviously this is a DO NOT MISS if you're in the area and like this blog at all.

· 2nd, I got an email from Ali Ralouf (AKA Dirti Ali of The Eternals, Vinyl Fever, and about half the music I write about here), who commented on my rhetorical inquiry about the new tracks on The Eternals' Myspace. As it turns out, these will be officially released in the near future, though he didn't mention a timetable, or which label they'd be released on. Still, great news that the Eternals are back!

· NYers can look forward to a solid dose of Classic House over the next week. First, The Martinez Bros. are back home for two shows, Thursday 4/24 @ Cielo and Sunday 5/4 at Webster Hall with Danny Krivit and his long-running 718 Sessions party. Not to be outdone, the Godfather of House, Frankie Knuckles makes his return to the big apple with a rare appearance at Cielo this Sunday. I was at his last Cielo appearance, and I promise you, the old guy hasn't lost a beat.

My friend Kiyoshi has taken on a major archiving effort and put all the known Daft Punk live recordings on his blog, putting them together for download for the first time. Quick note: Sorry I've been flaky updating the blog, work has picked up, and I've not had time to listen to music, let along write about it. There are a lot of things I'm looking forward to doing in the next few weeks, as long as my motivation and time return.

I also wanted to share some music with you on this rainy Saturday night, the last before the days are longer (and the nights a little warmer, please). A reader sent me a great track that i didn't know i needed, Todd Edwards' remix of Benjamin Diamond's "Little Scare". Beautiful stuff; as far as I can tell, Todd Edwards is the First and Last name in UK Garage (a genre name that still pisses me off (we've got our own Garage, thank you).

· Kristin from Showtrotta pointed out a link on Kidz by Collette to a recording from the LA show of the Falcon/Braxe tour at the Viper Room. If you were able to catch this tour of the cousins Quême, you know it was one for the ages.

· Secondly, and I'm sure more controversially, there's a new Daft Punk sampler in town, and it's Janet Jackson.

Janet Jackson - So Much Betta [RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD]

In the circles in which i find myself, there's been a lot of hating on this track, and the artist performing it. I must say though, i think there's a certain level of elitism going on (and perhaps closet racism?) in the backlash against Hip-Hop's love affair with Daft Punk. I have taken nothing but joy in seeing the worship of my heroes by the Neptunes, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, and now a Jackson, and while some might argue (fairly) that some of these artists are jumping late onto the Robots' bandwagon (and money train), I simply see it as testament to the timelessness and unstoppable appeal of Daft Punk. The fact that the sounds from Daftendirekt (as in Janet's "So Much Betta") and Around The World (as in Will.I.Am's "I Got It From My Mama [Remix]" [Link Here]) still sound as fresh as they did more then a decade ago, and are being appreciated by a Hip-Hop audience that is certainly more far-reaching then House has ever known. This is not theivery, but rather a continued coronation of the greatest musicians of their generation.

And for the record, I think Janet's the shit. She can do whatever she wants, she's the Queen. The track's great. Let the debate begin...

Dirty Ali & Funky Farid (known to their parents as Ali and Farid Allalou) have more Aliases then i can count, but seeing as they're all great, there's no reason for complaint. During those golden years of the French Stuff, they released 3 EPs under the Vinyl Fever 'Guise: two on the legendary Vertigo series, and one on the short-lived Discoteque imprint of DJ Gilb'r's (Chateau Flight) Versatile Records. Ali and Farid have been gone from house circles for a while now (I believe the last music they released was in '04 with The Eternals, namely the imagined soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist, "Astropioneers"). However, a quick check of their MySpace page shows a recent re-styling, and four tracks that i cannot find anywhere, so perhaps they're up to some new things? The tracks are "Space Rider", "Abstract Moonstep", "Soundscape" and "Master of Sound"; if you've got a lead on these, please get in touch.

New Bangalter Track???

If you followed the link from Brett in the comments of the last post, you came across what is being alleged as a new track by Thomas Bangalter, called "Love". I've been scouring the web, but have come up with nothing more then speculation as to its authenticity, but either way its a solid track. Lemme know what you think.

EDIT: It appears that in addition to Headphone Sex, the track was also linked to on Palms Out. This seems fishy to me, but whatever.

EDIT OF EDIT (Re-Edit?):Ok, here's the deal: I dont know who TB is, neither do you. I like the song a lot, though. That said, I'm not willing to just accept Louis La Roche as its rightful owner, unless i see some more proof, beyond a brand new myspace page, conveniently opened the day the track was "leaked". No offense to Mr. La Roche, as i really do like the track, but if it truly does originate with him, it seems likely that he came up with the "TB" moniker and leaked it himself. Which is lame, but creative nonetheless. But until I get more proof, I'm still making no calls.

Nevertheless, I'm sorry that several of you are disappointed that I posted this, but in Disco House circles, its been kinda the big buzz this week, and despite whatever deception might be going on, its a bangin' track. Lets put this one to bed and move on, shall we?

Daft Punk was on the Grammys!?!?!?

In case you missed it, and i can't imagine why you wouldn't have, Daft Punk was on the Grammys 5 minutes ago. Kanye West came onstage to perform "Stronger" in a light-up black "Sgt. Pepper" Jacket (a la Alive 2007 Encore), with the backdrop of a pyramid that looked like the "Alive 2007" CD cover. Midway through, the middle of the Pyramid dropped out, and our favorite Robots appeared outlined in their red light-piping jackets. The cameras showed the inside of the pyramid, with the duo playing around on 4 "Lemur" Controllers. To my knowledge, this is the first footage of Daft Punk actually playing their controllers in the Pyramid, and I just learned that this was the first live TV broadcast in DPs history. Way Cool. I had just been lamenting the loss of Daft Punk for the forseeable future, but maybe they won't be going too far after all.

Hey Everyone,

Sorry if you've been checking back here, expecting to find new music, or some words or something, and have come up empty. After thinking I may have figured out a cure, it turns out that I'm suffering from the winter blues, same as always. I'm finding it quite stifling, creatively, and i think for the past few weeks, I've been posting up music here just because I thought I should, not necessarily cause i wanted to. But there's some good things on the horizon, and I'm hoping that this little spurt of warm weather, combined with some fun activities, will get me out of my funk.

First off, going a couple weeks back, I had a blast at the 1-year anniversary of People Dont Dance No More party. Metro Area was surprisingly ho-hum; they seemed to be playing a lot of Disco tracks, but it seemed like they were more interested in obscurity then danceability. However, Tim Sweeney (who's quickly becoming one of my favorite NY DJs) was terrific, as was party host David Bruno. It was so refreshing to see Studio B full of people genuinely excited to hear Disco/House; there was barely an ironic dance to be found, which is a real accomplishment in that place. And on Saturday Night, I made my way over to Ain't Nuthin' But A Houseparty at the Union Square Ballroom, which continues to impress me with its Deep House goodness. This has been a great weekend, first off. Had a great time at the Metro Area/Tim Sweeney night at Studio B. on Friday, and my Giants actually played like a playoff team yesterday! All this goodness didn't overcome the fact that I got hooked up by a couple of new friends with some records i've been searching for for a while.

If you've kept up with my blog, you know that I'm a huge fan of the duo of Ali and Farid Allalou, better known as Dirty Ali and Funky Farid, the creative force behind The Eternals and Vinyl Fever. In 2002, they teamed up with Madjid Hocine to create 3 records under the moniker "The Altered Beast".

Here is the first (I believe) of their 3 EPs, this released on the seminal but currently dormant 20000st. Thanks, Steve!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you've all slept off your hangovers, its time to get '08 going! For those of you in New York, there's a couple of big music events happening this weekend that I'd like to throw out if you hadn't heard already:

First off, tonight (Thursday 1/3), Mr. Oizo is DJing at Hiro Ballroom at GBH's weekly "Cheeky Bastard" party. There is free admission with an RSVP here. I'm a bigger fan of Oizo's pre-Ed Banger music, but hopefully he mixes things up a bit tonight.

Tomorrow night, "People Don't Dance No More" is celebrating their 1 year anniversary at Studio B with Metro Area and Tim Sweeney from DFA. It should be a lot of fun, I've been wanting to see Metro Area for a long time, and it seems like perfect mood music for this cold weather (despite the fact that Studio B will be near-tropical inside as always.

Like most music fans of my generation, I came to know of Romanthony through his collaboration with Daft Punk on their 2001 LP Discovery, lending his voice and lyrics on "One More Time" and "Too Long". Yet despite the newfound Fame and Pop acceptance, Romanthony has been largely unheard from since '01, aside from a couple of 12" releases. However, prior to Discovery, Anthony Wayne Moore released a couple dozen EPs, mainly on the Black Male Records label that he helmed. Ranging in genre from Tech and Garage to Gospel and Pop, Romanthony's music is deeply personal, recorded in a Lo-Fi basement style that serves as a counterpoint to many of the other artists with which he is associated.

I should say that my hope in posting these recordings, besides just to share and celebrate, is that perhaps some of you know where he's been hiding. Despite having grown up only minutes from his home at the Jersey Shore, I've still never heard of any performances or DJ sets from him in a loooooong time, but I'm hoping that some of you readers with "inside" information might help spread a little information. He's just too good to be hibernating, and if there's a venue to be hearing his new work, I'd love to know it. I'm working on collecting as many of his older recordings as possible, and i've come across a few great ones of late. I'll be posting them up over the next few days. If you have any others that you'd like to "contribute", please drop me a line.

I received a few tracks this week from Frederick, which has gotten my juices flowing on a couple of fronts. The first that i'll go into today is Vertigo Records, a French label that I've been trying to collect for a while. There are only 8 EPs on this somewhat mysterious imprint, dating from 1999-2002, many of which contain tracks from "alter egos" of some of the princes of French House, including Romain Tranchart (Modjo), and Ali and Farid of the Eternals. The records here are classic looped-disco, a la Crydamoure, but with a much more "edity" feel, and with more vocal samples. All in all, real fist-pumping stuff that'll keep you wiggling for a long time. Hope you enjoy!

None of these tracks are really Roulé releases besides the Bob Sinclar Remix, but I figured they should be grouped together for one reason or another. They're all essentials for any collection of house music from this era.

First up is "Bob Sinclar's" Gym Tonic. It is my belief and understanding that this White Label track was stolen from Thomas Bangalter, nicely told in the story that follows, which is reprinted from the account by LeDJFaB on the discogs page:

Entirely produced by Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk), "Gym Tonic" bacame, over the years, a kind of mythical record. According to the rumours, Bangalter didn't want the track to be released commercially. But it gained such a success as a promo that Sinclar decided to put it on his first album "Paradise", crediting himself as the main author and Bangalter as the remixer. This event leaded to several legal problems: Jane Fonda took legal actions for the uncredited use of her voice, and it finally cost around 75 000$ to clear the sample. Many opportunist, commercial dance acts stealed the main idea of the record: the most popular one, Spacedust, released "Gym And Tonic" (which even reproduce Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You" melody). Finally, Bangalter decided to "ban" Sinclar's remix of "Music Sounds Better With You" by ordering new versions of the song to Dimitri From Paris and DJ Sneak. It is unlikely that these two DJ's will ever work together again. Choose your camp.

Use your ears, i think they'll validate the story.

This is another one that is/was rumored to have originated in the Thomas Bangalter/Together circle, but it seems that consensus is that Bangalter/Falcon simply got access to Eric Prydz's master tracks early on, and made their own White Label Mix, which is available below, as well as the "Played Live" version, which i have credited as from a show by Cassius & DJ Falcon at the Original Pacha Club in Ibiza on 8/13/03. If anyones got better information, do share.

The aura of this track has definitely grown since the Alive '07 Tour, and its incredible encore came into existence, although i've loved this one from the moment i've heard it. Its the epitome of French Touch; catchy loop puts you in a trance, only to get slapped in the face by that awesome synth line.

The snippet floating around as Together03 has been released as "Patrick Alavi - Party With Music". I was never sure if it was Patrick Alavi's track from the beginning used to spread the fake misnamed snippet, or that it started out as a Together track but got nicked by Alavi. However given the timing and some comments by Falcon, I tend to believe the track always was by Patrick Alavi from the start, so that pretty much solves the mystery.

Lets talk about this guy for a second. You will not find a cooler producer in the world then the reclusive DJ Falcon. The guy has released just four other sides during the 8 years since this 12" was released, each of which contain some of the most perfect, wonderous, blissfull, anthemic house tracks off all time.

HOWEVER...as pointed out in this interview, sent in by Brendan (a friend of the blog), Falcon and his helmeted production partner will be dropping some new goodness on us in the near future. I expect goosebumps.

Also, having recently read his Discogs page, I found out that he's Alan "Braxe" Quéme's cousin, which makes that the coolest family i can think of. What a privilege it was to see them play together last month, its still pretty hard to believe.

Note: On Honeymoon (sweet, sweet Honeymoon), there is a wierd break that sounds like Blackberry interference, and then the track drops again in perfect sync, on the downbeat. I've had conflict in my head about whether this was intentional or an accident. It seems unlikely to have been accidental (cause why would it make it onto the wax if it was), and were there even Blackberries in 1999? But if its sopposed to be there, why? If anyone has any insight, please let me know.

That interferance sound is done on intention... or at least partly. The story goes Thomas walked in with some radio-like device while Dj Falcon was working and this interferance made it into the recording. Falcon wanted to remove it, but Thomas liked it and insisted it stayed in the song... and well, the rest is history. I'm not sure were I recalled this from. It might have been from an old Falcon interview. In any case it comes from the good old daft crew forum [sic] so I'm pretty sure this is how it happened.
